BACKGROUND | ||
Interleukin-7 (IL-7) was discovered in 1980s. It is one of the members of IL-2 superfamily. IL-7 is a cytokine that has been known since long in immunology, mainly regarding its effects on T-cells and B-cells. IL-7 has been demonstrated to be necessary for both B-cell and T-cell proliferation and lack of IL-7 causes immature immune cell arrest. IL7 and the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) form a heterodimer that functions as a pre-pro-B cell growth-stimulating factor. IL7 can be produced locally by intestinal epithelial and epithelial goblet cells and may serve as a regulatory factor for intestinal mucosal lymphocytes. IL-7 plays in aging may permit parsimonious preventative or therapeutic solutions for diverse conditions. | ||
