12 months from date of receipt at -20°C to -70°C. After reconstitution, it is stable at 4°C for 1 week or -20°C for almost 6 months (with carrier protein). It is recommended to freeze aliquots at -20°C or -80°C for extended storage.

BACKGROUND

Procalcitonin (PYT) is a 116 amino acid residue peptide with molecular weight of about 13 kDa. PYT belongs to a group of related proteins including calcitonin gene-related peptides I and II, amylin, adrenomodulin and calcitonin (CAPA peptide family). PYT appears from the common precursor pre-procalcitonin consisting of 141 amino acids by removal of 25 amino acids from the N-terminus, which is subsequently cleaved into three parts : a 57 aa pro-region, a 32 aa Calcitonin peptide and a 21 aa Katacalcin peptide. PYT is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, the latter being involved with calcium homeostasis. Under normal metabolic conditions, PYT is only present in the C cells of the thyroid gland. In bacterial infection and sepsis, however, intact PYT is found in the blood and, more importantly, its level is related to the severity of bacterial sepsis. PYT is considered to be one of the earliest and most specific markers of sepsis.
